How will I develop my Skills?

Practice, Practice, Practice!!!!! Listen to as many styles of music to familiarise yourself with the sonic qualities specific to a certain musical genre. For example, a drum sound produced for a Jazz ensemble would most likely not suit a metal album........

Mixing vs Mastering?

Mixing - Ensuring everything sounds clean, spaced, well balanced, coherent and allowing their moment to shine. Mixing is also a creative process and can involve the manipulation of sounds which may be specific to a certain genre. For example, guitars in an ambient track may be drenched in reverb, chorus effects to depict a certain emotion or atmosphere.

Mastering - Adding the final polish to the whole track and making it Loud and Proud. Subtle changes may be added such as cleaning up the low end or adding that extra sparkle to the top end. Mastering will not fix a suffering mix. It may pay to go back to your mix should more comprehensive adjustments need to be made
